How can we help?

Rules, answers to common questions, and a way to reach us.

How do I play?

Each side hides five boats on a 10 × 10 grid: a Carrier (5 squares), a Frigate (4), a Cruiser (3), a Submarine (3) and a Patrol Boat (2). Players take turns firing one shot at a square in the other side's waters. A white splash is a miss and an orange blast is a hit. When every square of a boat has been hit, it sinks and is revealed. Sink all five enemy boats first to win.

How do I place my boats?

Drag each boat from the dock onto your grid. Tap a placed boat to turn it between across and down. Drag a boat off the grid to send it back to the dock. Boats may touch but can't overlap. Tap Random to place the whole fleet at once, or tap a boat in the dock to drop it in a random open spot. With VoiceOver, use the Random button or the actions on each boat.

Do I get another shot after a hit?

No. Battle Boats uses the classic rule of one shot per turn, hit or miss.

How does Pass & Play keep fleets secret?

After each shot, tap Pass and hand the device to the other player. A privacy screen covers both fleets until the next player taps Ready, and it tells them what the last shot did to their fleet.

How strong is the computer?

Easy fires at random. Normal fires at random until it hits something, then hunts along that boat until it sinks. Hard works out where the remaining boats could be and fires at the most likely square every time. It needs about 45 shots on average to sink a fleet. The computer never peeks at your boats. It only knows its own hits and misses, just like you.

What counts in my stats?

Wins, losses, win rate, accuracy, streaks and your best (fewest-shots) win count games against the computer. Pass & Play games are counted separately. Leaving a game early doesn't count. You can reset stats from the Stats screen.

Can I turn off sound or haptics?

Yes. Tap the gear on the main menu and switch Sound or Haptics off. Sounds also follow your device's silent switch.

Does Battle Boats have ads or in-app purchases?

No. There are no ads, no in-app purchases and no accounts. The game works fully offline.

Which devices are supported?

iPhone and iPad running iOS 17 or later. On iPad you can play in any orientation.
