How can we help?
Rules, a little strategy, answers to common questions, and a way to reach us.
How do I play?
Players take turns drawing one line between two neighbouring dots, across or down. Whoever draws the fourth side of a box claims it and must draw again straight away. One line can finish two boxes at once. When every line has been drawn, the player with the most boxes wins. Ties are possible.
How do I draw a line?
Touch near the gap between two dots. The nearest open line lights up in your colour while your finger is down. Let go to draw it, or slide your finger away from the board to cancel. The touch area is deliberately generous, so you don't need to hit the line exactly. With VoiceOver, every open line and every box is listed, and you can double-tap a line to draw it.
What's a chain, and why would anyone give boxes away?
Late in the game, every line you draw hands your opponent at least one box. Boxes with two sides drawn link into chains, and whoever is given a chain can take every box in it. A strong player taking a long chain will sometimes leave the last two boxes on purpose (or four, in a closed loop). The opponent takes those two but then has to open the next chain, which can be worth far more. The Hard computer plays this way.
How strong is each computer level?
Easy takes any box it can and otherwise draws at random. Normal never draws a third side if it has a choice, and when it must, it gives away as little as possible. Hard also counts chains, fights to make you open the first long chain, and sacrifices boxes to keep control. In our tests on a 5×5 board, Normal beat Easy in 399 of 400 games, and Hard beat Normal in 316 of 400.
Can I undo a move?
Against the computer, yes: Undo takes back the computer's reply and your last line. You can tap it more than once. In Pass & Play there's no undo, so every line counts.
What happens if I leave a game?
Every game saves itself after each line. Close the game or the app, and the menu offers to resume it next time. Starting a new game replaces the saved one, and a finished game clears it.
How does Pass & Play work?
Choose 2, 3 or 4 players and pass the device around. Each player has their own colour and shape, shown on the scoreboard and in every box they claim, so the board is easy to read even without colour.
Can I turn off sound or haptics?
Yes. Tap the gear on the main menu and switch Sound or Haptics off. Sounds also follow your device's silent switch.
Does Dots & Boxes have ads or in-app purchases?
No. There are no ads, no in-app purchases and no accounts. The game works fully offline.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone and iPad running iOS 17 or later. On iPad you can play in any orientation.
